Keep Public Land a Park and removing Bats & their noise and smell – A Petition to Cairns City Council.

John Egan Park and The Pioneer cemetry in Cairns North Queensland are being neglected in order to encourage Bats, they smell and squak 24 /7 so much so that people are not able open windows and some residents dont go in their back yard, or have guests over.

Grass is upto one metre high in John Egan Park Groves street and the Pioneer cemetery in Mcleod street. There is a fence now stopping people enjoy the park area and there is no respect to the residents in the cemetery.

The Cairns city council charge property owners rates. My rates are $9.60 Per day 365 days of the year – 

Apparently someone encouraged the bats to the area without consent of the locals. If you own land in urban Cairns Queensland Australia you cannot legally keep one rooster, have a dog that barks or long grass, make noise  without Queensland police or the Cairns city council intercepting and probably fining or arresting you.

Myself and others have contacted CAIRNS city Council, the local MP. and Queensland Police. nothing has changed.

I took a photo of two Kookaburra from my place, they are not in the lovely trees in John Egan Park Cairns North, i would like to see more native birds and people being able to access John Egan Park and for some respect to those in the Pioneer cemetery Cairns Queensland Australia.

It is understood the bats are protected, that’s fine but they create so much smell and noise, as per a top politician in Charters Towers stated “its time the flying foxes are culled” they certainly should not be in urban areas causing so much annoyance.

To the people that support the bats, try living close to them, then see how nice the smell is, as a neighbour said his clothes if on the clothes line smell like elephant dung.

11/April/2026 – Update:  Between 1700 and 1900 hours on April 9th 2026. Cairns  International Airport  had to Re schedule aircraft movements due to a very large number of the bats flying in protected airspace at both ends of runway 33/15. This would have also affected possible emergency helicopter flights to Cairns Base Hospital and perhaps the Queensland Police Helicopter being of service.  

CAIRNS CITY COUNCIL – How can you protect so many bats and think you are doing a good deed with yourselves?
